Across the Years 2012

What the hell is Across the Years?

Well, it is the premiere 24/48/72 Running event in the world.  Held December 29th through January 1st.

Where is it?
In the warm Sunny Arizona desert.  This is the top of my car the first day of the race.

Who puts on the race?
None other than the Fabulous Coury Freak Brothers
If you don't know these dudes they are top notch runners, really cool guys and run one of the best series of races I know of

Who kind of people does this race attract?
Well one of the first dudes I ran into was a finisher of the Badwater 135 and ant the Brazil 135
Brian Recore
But to me he will always be the Doughnut Man.

What kind of shoes should you wear?
Loca's of course

What was I doing out here anyway?
Well my body was gimpy. I figured I'd come out drink some beer and hang out with friends.  I was hoping to get in 100 miles on day 2 of the race but more anything I was there to have fun.
The event is held at Camelback Ranch the White Sox/Dodgers Spring training facility
(Go ANGELS)
We got to pitch our tents on some super soft grass.
Weather dipped down into the low 30's the night before day one. If you want to freeze your ass off try sitting in my chair
The grass field had frosted over
A motley crew of runners lined up at the start.
and they're off.
Race director Nick Coury
I joined in with my good friends Vanessa and Shacky for a brief spell. They were doing the 72 hour race and were moving so fast I could barely keep up?
I then went  off to play with Rosie (a wild Chicken) and some feral children.
But really I spent most of the first day drinking beer and eating Avocados.
(what else is new)
At sunset I decided to join my friend Holly who would go to finish her first 100 mile race.
Holly and I are practically twins.  I think we might have been separated at birth?
It was getting cold quick, once the sunset
 But that didn't phase Vanessa

While Shacky and Vanessa ran I played with their dog Ginger
and Drank beer with some kids.

Diclaimer:  This little dude seemed to know only two words "Beer and Cheers"  When he saw my Arrogant Bastard he kept saying "Beer, Beer"   a few minutes later he walked over to his Daddies cooler (who was running in the race) and pulled out a Stone IPA to Cheers me with.
  "Cheers to you little Dude."

Day 2

Time for me to race (I guess if that's what you wanna call it)
Well I felt pretty good for about 4 hours and I  I was cruising at between a 7 and 9 minute miles having a good a time.Bbut I kind of knew things were gonna head south.
Look out Lunatic coming through
About 30 miles in I decided to make a change
In with the beer, off with the Luna's
 and on with the Loka's.

During my first lap running in them I past 13 people wearing traditional Hoka's.  It was my first time wearing a shoe this tall.  Maybe it would be fun for bombing some technical down hills, but on a flat course like his it seemed pretty stupid.

After 3 or 4 one mile laps I ditched them for a pair of Skechers Go Bionics.  By now my foot was hurting and it was also cold so I figured I would give them a try. Once again I wasn't there to prove anything so I decided to walk a few laps and socialize telling and listening to dirty jokes with my friends wife.

My day was pretty much done when I decided I would see if medical could tape my foot up in a way that let me run.  I didn't think it it would work but it was worth a try?  It bought me two laps before it got uncomfortable and I wanted to try my sandals once again.
Unfortunately when I removed the athletic a big chuck of skin came with it and my running was done.  Maybe it was for the better, you can see my foot was pretty swollen and I really had no business running on it anyway.
After another cold night the runners kept on moving
I decided to walk a lap with Vanessa as I had my morning Coffee.
MY foot was hurting but I was in good mood
Luckily it was too cold for any bats.
As we walked we were passed by this guy a couple of times.
Start of day 3
It was really cool to see some kids out there running.
While others ran I hit the showers at the Dodgers Clubhouse.
.
Nice shoes Jamil.
For just 3 easy payments of $33.33 I will turn any pair of shoes into sandals.
That little dude again, where are your parents?
There's mom kicking ass on her way to busting out 100km for the very first time.  Way to go Sarah!

I sat around and drank beer with new friends
While others kept running
It was New Years Eve and I was sleepy and cold so I took a nap from 9 p.m. to 11:30 There's my heater in my tent right next to a WARNING telling me not to have a heater in my tent.
I may have been cold but I was'nt as cold as Mike Miller
After a toast of Champagne at midnight I strolled a couple laps with friends
I'll be running Fuego Y Aqua and the Caballo Blanco Ultra Marathon with these Cats in just a few days.
The race was almost over and Shacky was jumping for joy.
Can you guess the name of the winner?
this dude ran over 330 miles in 72 hours breaking the course record!
Congrats to all the runners it was a great event.
Good job guys.

Operation Jack 2012

Operation Jack Is one of the best races in South Bay and probably the second most scenic marathon in California to Big Sur.

Video from 2010

For the third year in a row I have intended to run in the Operation  Jack Marathon and been a total gimp come race day. Last year I fought through it and won the half marathon, but this year running fast would not be a good idea.  I thought participating in the full marathon would keep my speed down and be less taxing on my body.
I had planned on riding my bike down to the starting line but when I awoke at 4 a.m. it was pouring rain.
Lucky for me and all the other runners the skies cleared up about an hour before the race providing us with perfect weather to race in
After the first mile I was about  45 seconds behind my friend Dave James I was comfortably running a sub 6 minute pace but he was running closer to a 5 minute one.  Dave slowed down and through 5 miles I was still in second less than a minute behind.    By then my foot was'nt feeling good and I started to contemplate dropping out after after the halfway point. Mentally and physically I was defeated and I was okay with that.  I new coming into the race that I probably shouldn't be running in the first place and I was hoping that I would quit before causing serious damage.

Had I signed up for the 1/2 marathon I would have won but instead I took a DNF.
Time to go root on some friends
What a beautiful day
Looking good Randy Nice Sandals

Way to Go Jess!

1st place in the marathon was settled by a sprint to the finish and this guy coming in ahead of second place by just a couple seconds.  And guess what he won??

A gift Certificate for a pair of
By the way there were 4 people in the race already racing in them,
Although they did not come in first these 2 seem like winners to me choosing to walk for a little while, hold hands and enjoy each others company.

If your looking for somthing fun to do the day after X-mas I highly recommend the Operation Jack Marathon. For more info go to
or  read my past race reports

The race was big success and raised over $42,000 for Autism research.  But even with that kind of amazing support. Sam has to fight battles everyday to keep Jack safe and provide him with a happy childhood.  Sam is currently trying to get Jack into proper school and needs your support please go here  to find out more and join  Jack Army  It only takes a second and does not cost any money.
Thanks

When I grow up? I wanna be like Badwater Ben Jones

Badwater is one of the most inhospitable places on Earth.  Why do people keep coming out to the desert to
run?

They come out to meet it's  Mayor of course!
:)

Ben Jones, M.D., has birthed more than 1,000 babies, performed 2,000 autopsies, and run 133 marathons in his 73 years. He's learned some lessons about living the best life along the journey.
From the March 2006 issue of Men's Health Best Life

If you ever been out to Badwater you know exactly who I am talking about.  Nobody gets more excited about Badwater and knows more about its history of crossings than Ben.  When the Annual Badwater 135 comes around he is like a little kid on Christmas, full of giddy smiles and great stories to share including tales of his own 3 crossings of the desert during one of witch he preformed an Autopsy during the  race.
Ben does a great job as narrator for the Badwater Documentary
"Running on the Sun"

Four years ago I went to crew Badwater for the first time. It was their that I first Met Ben Jones.  My runner Danny Westergaard was just beginning his trek down the Whitney portal on his way to doing a double crossing.  Ben went out of his way to make sure we were well prepared as a crew and wished both our crew and Dan safe passage back to Badwater.

Over the last four years I have gotten know Ben and feel very fortunate to call him my friend. Seeing Ben is deffinetly something I look forward too each year.

Badwater isn't the only place I run into him.  At many Ultras  I've come around a corner to find Ben with camera snapping away.

Ben's a great photographer, but there's only only so much he can do to make a dude like me look good.

I'm always stoked to see him even though  it means I have to pretend that I am running for a little while.
As if Ben wasn't cool enough without his better half.  The dude some how scored himself a smoking wife?  Not only is his wife Denise a sweetheart she has completed the Badwater 135 and helps out every year taping runners feet before the race.  Her expertise on the subject is second to none and proudly goes by the nickname
"The Blister Queen"
Mike Morton (2012 champ) and Ben
When I did a Google search of Badwater Images? I found a who's who of Ultra runners all proudly standing next to a smiling Ben Jones
I even found one of my Good buddy Barefoot Ted.
Ben will be 80 years young this year and still possess a youthful spirit and a contagious zest for life.

Someday I'll get around to crossing that desert myself and when I do I hope to see smiling face along the way.
Thank you Ben for being my friend and thank you for continuing to inspire myself and countless others.
:)
